The beavercreek Years

1992-2010

The History of Patterson Park Church

In 1980 the Lord led the leadership of the church to write a five-year plan. God blessed the church in a very gracious way with increased attendance and an expanded staff and programs. In 1982 construction began on an addition to the east side of the worship center to accommodate a growing Sunday school and AW ANA program.

In 1989 a recommendation by the Deacon Board to buy 13 acres of land at 3655 East Patterson Road was approved by the congregation. Contracts were signed and the land was purchased debt-free in November of 1990. The first service in the new church was held on September 20, 1992, with nearly 1,000 people attending this worship celebration. The formal dedication of Phase I of the new Patterson Park Church was held on Sunday, November 15, 1992.

In the final weeks of 1999, the church was able to retire the debt taken to construct the new church. The next year, 2000, marked the 50th anniversary of Patterson Park and it was celebrated in May by inviting charter members, former members, and former staff to join with us to praise God for how He built, preserved, and continues to use Patterson Park Church. Rev. Kurtz retired at the end of 2001 after 28 years as Senior Pastor. Following an interim period overseen by Rev. Terry Wright, Patterson Park Church welcomed Dr. Keith Moore as its new Senior Pastor on February 2, 2003.

Facility Highlights

Our new building quickly became a hub for ministry and community life. We celebrated a Building Dedication with Dr. Warren Wiersbe, later rejoiced in burning the mortgage, and even added a playground for families to enjoy.

New Ministries Begin

The Beavercreek years saw the launch of many beloved ministries that are still part of PPC today:

  • Orchestra bringing rich music to worship
  • Operation Christmas Child, sparked by the Dayton Bosnia Peace Accord and local news coverage, with 15-year-old Joey leading the way
  • Primetimers, creating connection and encouragement for senior adults
  • Annual 5K race, paired with the Good Neighbor Sunday picnic
  • ASL Ministry, opening doors for the deaf and hard of hearing to engage fully in worship and community

Milestones

This era was marked by major celebrations and changes, including the Golden Jubilee (our 50th Anniversary) and a significant step in leadership, as the church’s constitution shifted from Pastor-led to Elder-led.

Staff Transitions

Leadership also grew and shifted during these years. Pastor Dale Kurtz retired, followed by Interim Pastor Terry Wright, and then Pastor Keith Moore stepping into the role of Senior Pastor.

The church was further strengthened by the addition of many associate pastors, including Doug Moss, Greg Trout, Matt Goehring, Paul Clark, Ryan Gordon, David Farrell, Dan Sietman, Joe Godwin, David Faile, David Boucher, and Josh Howard.

Highlights from the Newspaper

"Soon after moving into the new campus, 1991 or 1992, leadership thought it good to advertise in the Yellow Pages. Somehow Dale Kurtz and the Deacons asked us if we'd be in the ad. We warned Dale that if so, we'd become "Mr. and Mrs. Patterson Park". No argument from those in charge.  Years later, around 2000, when Keith Moore was a candidate, He came to me and said, "You must be somebody important, you're in the Phone Book." I kind of laughed that off and said it must be because Nelle was so photogenic."
